You
are so generous to give your time and attention to this process, and we are
truly grateful for this. This year, over 2,400 students shared their personal
stories of courage; these students, many of whom shared stories they’ve
never told before, wrote from the depths of their hearts and experience.
That in itself takes real courage. By being a caring, respectful audience,
you’ve elevated their work. You’ve given these students an opportunity not
just to write, but to be heard. I can’t tell you what an honor it is to
share with students each year this message: not only were your stories
read, but they moved people. They inspired people. They helped people.
They challenged people.

As we read through the essays you selected and the comments you made, we are
reminded that courage has so many different faces. From standing up to bullies
to making an unpopular choice, to building self-esteem or persevering
through illness or violence, each child gives us their definition of
courage. You have tackled the daunting task of narrowing down those 2,400
essays and given us what promises to be a truly moving, inspiring, and rich
volume of essays. I hope you will save the date for our Awards
Luncheon—May 10th at 11:30 AM, Park Plaza Hotel, Boston—when we look
forward to celebrating the 2012 Max Warburg Fellows and the release of The
Courage of Boston’s Children, Volume XXI (invitation to follow).
