The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum began working with international partners in 2007, in response to a growing need for accessible, proven literacy and character development curriculum. To date, “The Max” has partnered with schools and communities in places such as Thailand, Cambodia, the United Kingdom, Mozambique and India.
We seek to engage with schools and learning communities across the Globe to engage students in the reading and writing process, while empowering them to discover, recognize and celebrate the courage in their lives.
Courage is universal. Young people across the planet continue to face myriad challenges and obstacles in an increasingly complex world; and yet, every child has the power to be courageous. By learning about Max and his courage as a young boy, as well as the courage of classmates, community members, and even characters in a book- students are primed for reflecting on, and sharing, their own courage stories.
Our program is taught in Boston and surrounding communities as a year-long English Language Arts curriculum, embedded during the school day and designed to meet state education standards. Our sixth and ninth grade programs culminate with a personal narrative whereby students share, in writing, about how courage is manifest in their lives or in their communities. Beyond Boston, our programs have been adapted and implemented to meet the individual needs of both traditional and non-traditional classrooms. For example:
- Our sixth grade “Courage in My Life” program is taught in a 12th grade equivalent English class in Thailand
- With the help of visiting volunteers and educators, students in Cambodia have read essays written by students in Boston, and in turn, written their own courage stories.
We welcome any organization wishing to partner with The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum to contact our office, for more information. We will gladly work with new partners to tailor our programs to best meet their unique needs.

I am an educational psychologist and would like to get this program going in South Africa. I stay in one of the most densely populated provinces called Gauteng. Unemployment amongst school leavers is reaching the 70% mark and violence is rife.
I would love to empower kids and youth to become more literate and more courageous.
If I had the money I would have started a Kurweil school immediately, because there are just so many children who cannot read.
Thank you, Elza– we will be in touch soon and look forward to exploring the possibility of working with you!
